It really is difficult to remain unbiased when it comes to discussing Americans. They arrogate to themselves the right to act as this planet's policeman, to condemn other countries for real or perceived breaches of human rights and to rail against forms of government which in American eyes are less democratic than theirs. As Americans are such good Christians, surely they know the passage in the Bible that says: "O thou hypocrite, before thou wouldst remove the splinter from thy brother's eye, attend to the beam in thine own eye!" Never has a passage from the Bible been more apt. So naturally do Americans become defensive when their own shortcomings are pointed out to them, because to face the truth would be unbearable.
Which other self-proclaimed peace-loving country has waged so many wars against smaller defenceless countries, has allowed the members of their military to commit atrocity after atrocity going back to WW2, the Korean War, Vietnam, and now Iraq?
In what other country do you need to be a millionaire or at least be able to raise millions in order to be elected to parliament or chief executive?
Where else on this globe has the education system broken down and/or deteriorated to such an extent that children no are no longer able to read and write or do simple arithmetic and need to take remedial classes upon entering college?
In which other country with the exception of certain Middle Eastern nations does a small fundamentalist religious minority have the power to manipulate both government and the media to enforce a Victorian concept of morality upon an unwilling population?
I could go on and on, but let this suffice.
No wonder Americans are sensitive when it comes to discussing their shortcomings

Unfortunately, this answer is heavily flavored with opinion. Opinions are great...everybody has one. Try reading some Alexis de Toqueville to learn more about Americans. A French perspective no less.

Look, we have plenty of shortcomings...like every other nation on the planet. The education baloney is gets really old though. Sure, we have dummies like every other nation on the planet. But c'mon...the rest of the world still follows us in high technology and none of the rest of the world can make a movie anybody wants to watch more than once.

Yeah, we have some problems with religious fundamentalism, but religion messes with lots of other nations to lesser and greater degrees. It's sure not a uniquely American problem.

Our election process needs help. I can't argue with that assessment.

Are we hypocrites...YES...that's a defining American characteristic. Guilty as charged. So what...

Now...atrocities...wow you really put your neck out there with that sort of outrageous statement. Atrocities occur in every war, but surely the peoples of Western Europe and the Western Pacific are grateful for the efforts of Americans to defeat German and Japanese fascism. And all you have to do is compare South and North Korea to know that our defense of South Korea was the right thing to do.

Vietnam -- yeah mistake...Iraq...of course it's a mistake.

But give us a chance and we'll make it right. Americans aren't just sensitive about our shortcomings...we are motivated to correct them...unlike the vast majority of the rest of the world.

The reason you think this answer was " right on ", is because you're right off.
If you made these statements about you're own country, there would be some heavy boots kicking in your door by now, and you would be writing your trash on the walls of a political prison.
I wont dignify your childish " questions ", with serious answers, except to say that Americans discuss their "shortcomings" every day just as you are allowed to do right here and now.
In your country, your neighbors would be waiting outside your door with a rope, or they might just stone you to death.

Your assessment of this answer, is as flawed as the answer itself. If this answer has hit the nail on the head, so to speak, answer these two questions. 1. If America has all these shortcomings, where did we get all this power to do these horrible things? 2. If America has all these shortcomings, why are immigrants, legal and illegal alike, beating down the door to get in? Queen Black, I have a suggestion for you. Even though you have the right to feel the way you do, why don't you try living in one of these countries that are, in your mind, superior to the USA. Are you afraid reality would slap you so hard, you might not regain consciousness? People like you make me sick!

Keep those thoughts in mind when your leader declares himself dictator for life and starts gassing people. Also remember that Americans have willingly sacrificed their lives to defend people from just about any country on the planet, and have given to charity more generously that the entire rest of the world. If you're such a proponant of what's in the bible, how come you don't remember the parts about being judgemental? Pot, meet kettle.

The greatest strength in America is her Constitution... and we should all remember it right now. This writer has the Right, the God given Right, to Freedom of Speech. If this writer feels that America's beliefs are wrong, then the writer needs to retract, and refrain from further comment, or be the hypocrite in question.

Why do people from all over the world want to come to America? So many so that we need to build a fence to keep them out . . .

Because America is the most prosperous, generous, liberty-loving country in the world.

Really? I work in construction and i want to police your country? I care if you can have a gun or not? i care if your wife can have a job? Well as far as i know i couldn't care less.. but because you stereotype me.. i might as well assume you all have that position on Americans so i supose i should just start stereotyping you also right? Because i wasn't up till now.

Military atrocities , eh ? Funny, the Death camps of Nazi Germany, the Bataan Death march, Rape of Nanking, Malmedy, gulags, Vietnamese "re education" camps, the forests of Katina, Carthage, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Warsaw Uprising, Kosovo and ethnic cleansing, Rwanda, Angola, Bangladesh....nope- Americans did none of those.

One more foreigner who hates the USA. Fine, no foreign aid for you, ungrateful harpie ! Go get it from the UN...and ask for some "peacekeepers" to save YOUR butt !
