The government acts as though all Communists are evil, but Communism isn't even a government system, it's an economic system that would actually work really well, if the government in question used the checks and balances system that we have in our government.

I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm just wondering why the government (that's what I meant, not the citizens) feels/has felt in the past that communism must be eliminated. And I'm sorry if I have my facts wrong, but in US History last year that was the general idea that I got from our teacher/book. (my teacher told us that he grew up being taught that commies were evil)

...Blagh...I wish this was a forum type thing so we could have actual debates...some of you are making good points...rapidashrachel on aim if anyone's interested in discussing this further, but I'm getting off for the night.
Ps. I don't mean that Communist countries right now are working well. I mean that communism as an economic system, if set up in such a way that the government wouldn't become totalitarian, would work well.
And to those of you who are just saying that commies are evil, thank you for proving my point.

Communism has never worked well anywhere for long. The fact speak for themselves. Only Cuba and North Korea are still communist, and they aren't doing great (though I suspect they will both last a few more years, or even decades). China calls itself communist, but in practice it is a capitalist authoritarian state.
That said, I don't think just being communist is enough reason to attack. If we got rid of the embargo with Cuba maybe we could expose more of their society to our ways and get a regime change at last, peacefully.

I can list a lot more Communist countries that we didn't attack that Communist countries that we did attack.
We never attacked the USSR, PRC, any of the Eastern European countries and only a small attack on Cuba (carried out by anti-Communist Cuban ex-patriots). The only Communist countries that we actually fought were North Korea and North Vietnam and in both cases, we had U.N. backing.

We have our own kind of Communism in America. It's called liberals. But besides that, if you ask many people that live in countries that are run by a Communist government, they will tell you that they want to leave. Don't believe me? Well in my line of business all I do is talk to people coming from Communist countries and the reason they are leaving these countries is because they can not have a fair or safe life with this form of government in place.

Well Communism hasn't worked anywhere yet where it didn't cause great harm to the citizens... but that aside, you make big assumptions when you say why does the US feel this way or that way. Be clear that it is the gov't and not the citizens doing anything. BUT with all that said.. since when has the US gov't been going around attacking communist nations? Did we ever attack the Soviet Union? China? Cuba?

If Communism is such a great thing, then why do the people in these countries do everything in the power to escape these countries and try to live someone else?

I think you mean "verbally attack", right?
Like the way we talk about Cuba?
I've never understood it myself...
I think Marx was right on the point that a country like USA will inevitably have to become socialist anyway...
(which is not the same as communist when you have a democratically elected leadership.)
