My computer is going extremely slow...it is full of worms and viruses! And what is worse is that I get some wierd pop ups at time that are not appropriate for younger children (ie downloading free "naughty" suff). As a concerned parent, I would really love to know how I could get rid of these worms and viruses. If you know of any programs I can safely download for free/free to try that could help me, please don't hesitate to tell me! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oooh, I and would it be smart to get a fire wall? If so, know of any good free ones? Sorry for all the questions; if you can't answer them all, I'm okay with that.

The bottom line is that you cannot protect your computer adequately with freeware. You get what you pay for.

If you are overrun with worms and viruses and adware.. then clearly you either do not care about your computer and the safety of your children or you're anxious to spend your money on fixing the computer or buying a new one...

I strongly suggest you purchase antivirus / firewall from a RELIABLE vendor like a McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky... all of the newer versions come with an option tp purchase them with antispyware as well... as long as you properly install them and properly configure them and ensure they are automatically updating.. you will not need to leave frantic messages on a public web board (which isn't the best way to get proper help either)... PLEASE DO NOT take my word for it.

From the description of the current state of your computer you may not even be able to clean the computer without formatting the entire thing..

You can attempt a web based scan from http://housecall65.trendmicro.com but this is not a solution it is a bandaid.

As for making your computer faster... If you were not killing it with crapware and allowing it to slowly die from al of these infections it would probably be running just fine.

Good Luck

First of all do u have a antivirus on your pc? That could help in getting rid of the trojans and virus's to but in case use those spyware links i gave u below. Well if u have xp u can use the xp firewall that should be enough but if u want somethign that is better for free try comodo firewall.
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Make sure for the antivirus u go to the right side of the screen and click just released. and its under mcafee. And its free to.
if u need any other help im here i will try my best to help out.

And for antivirus

This is how to get rid of worms And trojans.

Switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

Download avg antispyware and run it. Then delete what it finds. Then run ccleaner(ccleaner.com) then restart. then run the avg cleaner again to see if its on there. And hope its not on there. If u cant get it off then try asqared antimalware.(emsisoft.com). If that dont work go use spysweeper. (webroot.com) Avg is what took all of my trojans off my pc. If u need any other help please feel free to IM or email me any time thanks.

It sure sounds like you have been infected with some kind of malware. Unfortunately, if you find one infection, it is highly likely you have another one.

Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100% accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need at least two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.

There are two excellent free ones:
Spybot, Search and Destroy
and
Ad-Aware

Both are available FREE from www.download.com
You will need to download, install, update and run them, one at a time. Be careful with the NAME of these programs - there are "look-alikes" with very similar names, that are in fact spyware themselves!

After this current infection is cleared up, be sure to run both of the above programs at least once a week if you are on the internet frequently and/or like to download music or files.

Before you run these, clean up (delete) your cookies, temp files and temporary internet files. I prefer to use Ccleaner (available at www.filehippo.com) to do this, rather than the built-in DISK CLEANUP. If you want to use Disk Cleanup, you can find it if you:
- Double-Click on My Computer to open it up
- RIGHT-click on your C: drive
- Choose PROPERTIES and then click on the DISK CLEANUP button

Run Ccleaner every day right before you shut your computer down.

You should also have a good anti-virus program and a firewall to help protect your computer. AVG FREE is an excellent anti-virus program, which can be downloaded from www.download.com. Zone Alarm makes a totally free version (watch you don't download the 30-day free trial of the paid version). You can download this from the manufacturer at www.zonelabs.com

Taking the above steps will also help gain some speed.

HTH : )
Good luck!
