Probably the Romans. But to give credit to the people of the 1800's Howe invented the sewing machine, Sir Humphry Davy invented the first electric light bulb, Thomas
Davenport invented the first electric street car, Henry Bell invented the first Steamboat, and other inventions such as the saftey pin, the reaper for crops, the first lawn mower.........these are all things the Romans did not have. As far as being "in the know" , the 1800's exceeded in producing and inventing things, to enable themselves rather than sit in a huge bathtub!
