No, but they're up there.

No, that would be the Habs back in the Original Six days. Five consecutive Cups under the leadership of Maurice Richard. A feat that not even Gretzky, Jordan, Ruth, Brady, or any other given star has ever done. Your Detroit Red Wings, regardless if they're under Yzerman or Lindsay, can never hold a candle to them. And this coming from a Leafs fan.

This might be the dumbest question I've ever seen on here. Let us delve into why this is a terribly vague and also poorly worded question.

Greatest as in "most popular"?
No. Leafs and Habs win that one.

Greatest as in "most successful"?
No again. Montreal again is the most prolific champion.

Greatest as in "had the best team of all time during some era"?
Make it 3 no's. Early 80s Oilers teams or Al Arbour's Islanders were a dynasty. Toe Blake's Canadiens, Punch Imlach's Leafs, or the early 90s Penguins teams were all greater for a sustained period than any Red Wings teams.

Greatest as in "best run organization"?
No again. Ilitch is great for the Wings but is regarded as not so good as Tigers owner. And the Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, and the Minnesota Wild are generally considered to be better run organizations. Also, Toronto and the NY Rangers are more valuable (according to forbes). And although their attendance is good, they're outdrawn by Montreal and are out-attended percentage wise by 6 other teams (who have smaller arenas).

In other words.......

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!

...by any definition.

The Montreal Canadians are only second to the New York Yankees in professional sports championships all time.

Not even close, nor does any Red Wings team rank in the top 15.

Arguably you could the 1955-1960 and 1976-1979 Montreal Canadiens as the top 9.

The 1980-83 Islanders and 1984-1990 Oilers were better than any Red Wings team as well.

There are some Penguins fans here who would put their two teams up there, and many of the experts put the late 40s and early 60s Leaf teams among the greatest.

The 1970s Bruins and Flyers were pretty damn good as well.

The 1996-97 and 1997-98 Red Wings were good, but the experts don't rank them highly (although Red Wings fans do)

Not even close. I would give them 3rd spot overall though. The Habs are going to be considered the greatest team for years to come. Hard to argue with 23 cups.
