Actually it is a fantastic cover version of Leonard Cohen's original. Many others have covered it as well... Willie Nelson, Bono, Fiona Apple... etc.

The song features numerous biblical references and there is a long discussion about the probable meanings in the forum linked below.

Great question. I've often wondered. I think I 1st heard it on the OC and had to buy the CD.

its hard to tell,,,,,,,,,i always thought it was about love....like some of the lyrics he says to his woman..........

idk really, but its a really beautiful song
