I have a Columbia fleece jacket, and it's just not warm enough for the fall. Would a North Face Denali one be warmer? I don't want to spend all the money and still be freezing :( (I live in Upstate NY, and I'm cold ALL the time!)

You have to watch with North Face because they have two different quality levels. The products they sell in outdoor and sporting goods stores tend to be higher quality than Columbia BUT the pile jackets North Face sells at their discount mall "outlets" are garbage. The other answers have some good advice -- instead of worrying about the brand, you should look for the weight and type of fleece and the cut and style. Polartec comes in different weights -- type 300 is the thickest and the windproof versions are going to be warmest in windy conditions. Look for a high collar, cuffs that block wind and draft flaps over the zipper. A longer coat that covers your lower back and hips will keep you warmer than a short jacket. Also, the heaviest coat will do you no good if you don't cover your head with a good hat -- most of your heat loss is through your head and neck. Also, wearing a windshell over the fleece jacket you have will help keep you warmer and be more versatile than one heavy jacket. Fleece (except the windproof) tends to work better as an insulating layer than alone, especially if you are not doing active sports.

Other very good brands are Marmot and Mountain Hardware.

If you go with a TNF fleece, spend the extra bucks and get one with WindPro. Some of the Columbia Heat Elite fleece are also windproof. Buying any fleece that doesn't have a wind blocking material is pointless. Other companies use Gore Windstopper or Polartec WindBloc. These materials are better than the ones used by TNF or Columbia.

it depends on what columbia jacket you buy. Although The North Face is more expensive they usually have better jackets than columbia. Also before going to buy one research a little on which ones are wind resistant, that really helps to keep you warm.

I've worn North Face for as long as I can remember. They are so comfortable and warm, no matter what. I live in a place where it's freeeeezing in the winter, and I always wear them. They rarely get holes and they're really good for the price. Definitly go for the North Face! Hope I helped! :)

north face is better. columbia is built to sell to the masses. lots of cut corners to lower the price. (not to say that a heavy price tag will mean good quality) TNF just gives attention to detail and will be one of the top mfg. for technological advancements in fibers and blending them. I have a north face micro fleece. its good for fall and with an outer jacket combined. i have a northface down that is better in colder weather. still good with an outer shell. i have a mtn hardwear "poodle" jacket. as waram as the don but bulkier.
