Why do red-staters believe that the US is somehow "protecting our freedom" by killing people thousands of miles away?

It is simple, we believe that if we were not fighting the terrorist in Iraq and Afghanistan, they would trying to find was to attack us here at home. If we kill them in the middle east, then they cannot kill us here.
