I'm storing my motorcycle for the winter and my manual say's to add a teaspoon of oil to my cylinder and ground my spark plug wires while turning over the engine. How do I ground the wires so it doesn't spark?

basically all i do is not put the plug wires back on the plugs. the plugs wont be able to fire without the wires on em. i have a feeling this winter isnt going to be very harsh. i'm keeping my bike ready to ride at all times. as long as the roads are completely dry, its ride time for me.

Firecracker gave a good explanation on how to ground the spark plug caps.
Forktail has the right idea.
Your manual says to ground the caps in case any spark should jump out - either jumping to the spark plug and trying to start the motor (nothing wrong with that) or jumping to ground.
Either the spark could jump to you and shock you, or it could hit something flammable and "poof", buy another bike.
I've never seen that happen, it's 99% improbable.
A motorcycle doesn't produce enough voltage for a spark to jump as far as 2" - the distance to come out of the spark plug cap (1/4" tops).
Just pulling off the spark plug caps is fine (DO NOT insert the plugs into the caps).

As a mechanic I frequently have to check for spark while repairing a bike. Most of the time you can just lay the sparkplug on some part of the engine. However, many times it will just not stay put, or, a particular bike has a painted engine, in those cases I use an automotive jumper cable. Just clamp on to the plug body and the other end to almost any bare metal (or neg. battery post). When you have 4 plugs its a little more of a problem.

Stick a phillips screwdriver in the clip that goes on the plug. Lay the shaft of the screwdriver against the engine block.

I agree with forktail, Just leave them off the plugs, It won't hurt anything. I hope forktail is right about the weather here in Ohio. We could use a mild winter.
