I had recently turned 20 this summer and the strangest thing happened? I realised I was going nowhere in my life. I had dropped out of university and was just doing part-time jobs and pretty much not enjoying what I was doing. Since then I have started up doing an English course to bring my grades up to go to a better university and I've also taken up a music course because it's what I'm interested in. I just wanted to know if everyone else went through this strange type of quater-life crisis or if its just me growing up and getting sense. I also wanted to know how old you should be to start taking up a career, although I don't like office work I know I'll eventually be working there so just wanted advise on that. What you think?

It's not strange, you're becoming an adult. Alot of people think you become an adult at 18, but it's a long process. This isn't the last time you'll want to relook at your life- it happens in your 30's, then again in your 40's..then you'll realize you're 50 and start wondering what to do again.

I have a 75 year old friend who woke up one day and said "I want to play the piano" and is going to college for that. Every day is a new beginning...congrats for realizing life is short and making your life better!

p.s.- you asked about your career... the job you have now or in the next few years may not be the job you have forever. It might be a totally different field. Just do what you love and keep following the path that will lead you to your ultimate dream. Think about your talents and gifts, if you love writing, start there. Keep attending classes and you'll find your niche soon.

At 20 your still very young. Times of crisis/indecision will come and go for you for a while. I think that the changes that your making are good (taking classes, planning to go to a better university) but I would suggest going a step further. Sit down and make a list of the careers that interest you, with reasons as to why you think they would be good or not so good, and then make a plan as to the career you REALLY want to pursue. It's not a forgone conclusion that you'll end up working in an office - and at 20, I think your too young to just settle for whatever comes your way. You can still take control and make the life you want!

I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I was 20.

It was the years between 24 and 43 where I had a problem.

BTW -- at 43 I went back to graduate school & am now doing what I wanted to do when I was 20.

You're 20, you don't know everything yet. You are on the right track in taking it slowly. Enjoy your life a bit and don't take it too seriously.

Better ask yourself these questions....

DID I GROW UP (20 years old)?
OR,
DID I JUST GROW OLDER?

Think! Reflect!
