In the modern era (modern era is 1900 to present) Ty Cobb .3664.
Ted Williams was number 7 all time with .3444, if the trade every went through (the Red Sox & Yankees were trading Ted Williams & Joe Dimaggio, but the deal fell through on the day it was supposed to be made official) then probably Ted Williams would have had a higher batting average then Ty Cobb, but overall Williams was a better offensive player then Cobb

Cobb is widely credited with setting 90 baseball records during his career. He still holds several records as of 2007, including the highest MLB career batting average .366 and most career batting titles with 12 (or 11, depending on source).

Among players considered to have played a "full career", typically a minimum of 3000 or 5000 plate appearances, it's Ty Cobb, who batted .366.
There are some guys whose entire career was 1-1 (one went 3-3) and finished with a perfect 1.000, but those are not so interesting.

Ty Cobb but Ted Williams is only .023 points behind him and has 400 more home runs, Babe Ruth .025 and 600 more home runs.

Ty Cobb - .366.
Although, back then hits were common and Cobb did somethings on the baseppaths that were quite jerk-ish and against the rules.
