For almost a year now I have owned a class 3a green laser pointer. I know I'm not supposed to shine it at other people, at other vehicles, or at aircraft. What I like to do is shine it at reflective street signs. Some of these signs reflect the beam really well (especially at night). I searched the internet regarding laser laws but could not find and law prohibiting usage on signs. Does anyone know of a law (if any) that exists pertaining to the illegal use of lasers on public signage?

I don't think anybody has really thought of people shining lasers of public signs. Especially not a 3A green laser points specifically.

It is my understanding that it is only illegal if you intentionally shine it at a person, animal or an aircraft. However, I don't know if shining it at street signs is a good idea. That could reflect onto something else and potentially get you in trouble. Doesn't this also seem dangerous for those driving vehicles who need to read the sign?

I think that all depends on the state or the town that you live in. If there is no law forbidden you to use it at street signs, then I can't see there is a problem with it. But, be careful. What would happen if you did that and it caused some type of car accident? And that driver said something to the effect to the officers that something shined on the "STOP" sign and then they look at where it may have occur from? They may search and look and find out that it is you. You'd be surprised how things happen. You may be fine for some type of reckless mischief.
So, be careful with that.

The answer about how you can be surprised about what happens is excellent.

Rule of thumb. In anything if one has to ponder ir something is right or legal...... it is best to trust your instincts and not do it. Shining a light on a street sign sounds a little boring though and yes I can see as well as to how you could get into trouble, specific law or not.

The only problem I could see in using it on reflective street signs, could it reflect in someone's eyes & possibably cause them a problem in seeing? I have a small laser pointer that I use to let my dog chase around the house. The darn dog doesn't like to go outside by himself so I use it to exercise him, he sure likes it!

the power output of the laser is what the law is concerned with. pointing it at people or planes or car make people scared because lasers are used to target things, usually on a gun.

In America they only sell up to 1mw as you can be done for terrorism for pointing these at planes or police. However in Australia these are legal up to almost anything... I do not recomend these as they can often reflect of surfaces accidently and go into your eye They are too rediculously powerful..
