The best way to keep all insects out of your home is to keep it clean and dry. If it's clean and dry, insects won't come in, and therefore spider won't follow.

Is there really a way? I just try to keep debris, such as leaves, cleared from my house so that I can see if the spiders start making webs on my porch. If I see a web, I immediately knock it down and kill the spider. Other than this, I have no idea how to make sure that they aren't inside. They can come through the littlest hole, so make sure that any access is closed properly.

Like most insects, they can flatten themselves into unbelievable thinness and can slip through spaces around windows and doors. Then blow in the wind and can come in whenever the windows and doors are open. They can hitch a ride on your, children or pets, boxes, grocery sacks, etc.

Your best best, as stated above, it to keep the vacuum handy and use it several times a week, concentrating on baseboards or wherever the spiders may lurk. Don't forget basements, light fixtures, attic doors.

Don't forget to sweep outside as well, around doors, windows, in corners, walks, etc.

I can't cure your spider-phobia, arachnophobia, but you can get treatment if you wish. Realize they are helping keep your house pest free by eating smaller insects such as dust mites.
