First, you need to submit your site to google, so that it does get indexed. Then you might look into purchasing some adwords from google, or any other type of advertisement site. Post your website on your business cards, and/or try to get some local advertisement such as newspapers and local publications. Make some promotional materials advertising your website, keychains, pins, t-shirts, etc. Before you do this, though, make sure that your website is organized and that you have some interesting content for your visitors. Your first impression will have to be outstanding because you are competing with some really big firms out there.

Being the proud owner of your own web site, 2 questions.
DID you do it or did someone else do it.
Either way Here are a couple of things to remember. META TAGS added to each page will add the amount of hits to your site. Depending on your Hosting service you may even want to look into software like this.

I used to work with a really nice fella who would sit for hours quietly typing away and then suddenly he'd bang both fists on his keyboard, as hard as he could and shout 'Bastard'. The entire office jumped. He broke quite a lot of keyboards. I worked on a game where they hadn't got the string table right (long story). When its was meant to ask 'Resign?' (as in leave the race), it said 'English' (a string from the Language menu). This caught on, everytime someone looked like giving up people would look concerned and ask 'English?'.
