i dont believe slained is right..so what is?

slain is correct

He will be slain.
He was slain.
He could be slain.

How about you change the word to "killed"? It actually helps your sentence sound better...not so heavy. Something about the contraction doesn't work with a higher verb form. And try changing kids to "children" if you want to keep slain.

"The children hid from the robber to avoid being killed (or slain - you choose)."

Slain is past tense. Slay is present.
