Many of them have eye sight that is impaired with emacular degeneration or cataracts. I just found out my mother, who's 82, doesn't see well enough to pass the drivers test if she had to take it again. I told her she shouldn't be driving. Actually I said to her, "Shame on you for driving and putting innocent people in danger," because she told me she has known this for a long time! But she still insists on driving. My husband and I wouldn't let her drive for a whole year once because she had surgery and her reflexes and medications made it obvious to us that she shouldn't be driving. She put me through hell that year. She was miserable and made me miserable for the entire year. What should I do? Her doctor won't take her license away yet. I feel I did what I should by telling her where I stand and offering to drive her again. Do you think we should make her stop or leave it up to her? It is so hard to know what's right. And what's scarey

My question got cut off. I said at the end, What's scarey is that her friends drive worse than she does.

Kayne, as hard as it is to see, you are doing the right thing in protecting her and innocent people around her...

THere is a program with your local Department of Motor Vehicles. You can send an annoymous tip to them about your mother's declining eyesite, and they will set up a time to test her and if she fails, they will revoke her driving priveleges.

Thats when you get to step up and start driving her everywhere...

I applaud your convictions. As hard as it is, you are doing the right thing... I had to do the same thing to an old boss of mine due to an illness he came down with... Wasnt easy, but someone had to save him and others.

I think anyone over age 75 should not be driving... They are just too old... I hate it when theres some old lady driving 1/2 the speed limit down the road because she cant see more than 10 feet infront of her car... People that old dont need to go anywhere, theres a grocery store on almost every corner, if they need to go further, take a taxi and get off our roads... Not to mention half of them dont even know the rules of the road anymore since they took ther drivers test 60 years ago...

Ability to see and reflexes should determine when a person should no longer be driving, not age. I know I will go down kicking, but today in my right frame of mind, I hope when the time comes my children will stop me if I am too stubborn to admit that I am a menace on the road. We have two yearling horses who will need some work next year, beyond what has been done this year. It hurts me to think that at my age I may not be the one to finish breaking them, but that's reality.

i understand what you recommend, yet undesirable making use of is presented in each and all ages. notwithstanding, I see some elderly human beings get out of their vehicles and they could somewhat walk and it truly is obvious that their imaginative and prescient is a lot more desirable both. on the different hand, I actual have a neighbor it quite is 80 2 and he or she drives fairly nicely -- likely even more desirable than I do! i don't believe of you opt for a particular age and say ok no more desirable making use of for you. i imagine that once you attain a particular age, and also you've were given to renew your license, you should purely accept a highway attempt. even with each and every thing it may be on your man or woman safe practices as well because the safe practices of anybody else on the line or as pedestrians. i'm 40 8 and that i may be the first to step in line for it. i'm already questioning ahead to the time at the same time as i could ought to reveal my automobile keys over to my daughter - oh the perils of ageing!

Only if they can see and think good enough, and only if they pass the drivers' test (both written and driving). I think that people should have to retake their drivers' test when they're 65, and every 5 years until they are 75, and every 2 years after that. Old people are the scariest people on the road, worse than most teenagers.

NO they should not drive especially if they can't pass simple tests!! I watched an old man pull out of his driveway, go forward and rip his left side mirror off by an electrical post! At the least they should have their cars be painted a really bright color so people are more likely to notice them. LOL.

My father in law turned 92 in April and finally admitted he shouldn't drive anymore. It was like pulling teeth, though. Even after rear-ending someone at a light because his foot slipped off the brake and he hit the accelerator, he wanted to drive. It's terrifying that the DMV was going to let him renew.

Yikes. It is hard to know what to do.

No! My dad, before he died, drove like a maniac. He would make his own lane, drive IN the OUT lane, make his own parking spots, make a left turn from the right lane, etc. Boy, he was something else on the road.

No for sure.
I know a 96 year old who past the yearly test. He pulled out of his driveway and was killed by the oncoming car.
