It is a combination of both the reasons that you cited. It is even more of a problem when the person who misspells has a spell check system available and does not use it.
Another factor is text messaging which thrives on Another and shortcuts such 4 for four and yr for your. Students get into the nasty habit of using it, do not care how they write, want to be with the crowd and many don't even know the difference.

Too much reliance on spell check rather than learning to spell. Also some consider English their second language

Wow. I chat on messengers a lot, but I never let myself get in the habit of sounding like a moron. I hate when my friends message me sounding like a prepubescent child.

Because most of them are twelve and chat online all the time, which causes bad habits, or they just don't care.
