I remember back when stock car racing was something that was only shown on Wide World of Sports as filler, and the idea of watching people play cards on TV would have been considered absurd. So have NASCAR and the world series of poker finally gotten the recognition they deserve, or did they just market themselves better?

They marketed themselves better. I mean, really, who wants to watch a bunch of guys make a left for four hours? I consider myself a pretty serious poker player, but I can only watch so much poker. With hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and even golf (I play, that's how I can watch), I can watch every day because it is enjoyable to do so.

NASCAR has had a National Television contract since 1974, and has always had strong sponsorship (Of course when your primary sponsors are Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler - it will be strong).

In the late 1970s, NASCAR was the king of Sunday afternoons.............in all areas except the American Northwest. It wasn't until 1979 that the NFL overtook NASCAR in the ratings.

The main thing with NASCAR is that while they haven't increased their TV ratings, nor their track attendance, Bill France managed to increase their product placement revenue 900% between 1975 and 1990 by promoting it as a "good ol' American sport". How many #3 stickers do you still see on pickup trucks?

Poker? I have friends who watch it because it could easily be them in the seats. It appeals to the common man apparently. I've never much liked poker and don't see all the fuss.

A lot of it is marketing. The bandwagon effect is a powerful thing once people see others watching a sport they'll start watching it too. Unfortunately for the human race, that's what happened with NASCAR, Bowling and the Card game that shall not be named as long as it is broadcast on TV.

Soccer and Hockey are much superior products, but not marketed well.

I watch poker, not because of the marketing, but because Joe Average can do it.

The only reason poker is on ESPN so much is the Las Vegas scene gave them so much money to promote Vegas. ESPN received enough money from the Vegas Casinos, they practically gave away the comnmercial spots.

This was detailed in USA today a couple of years ago.

NASCAR's been hugely popular since the 1960s. It has been among the highest grossing sports in America since the 1950s

Watching NASCAR and Poker on TV. Or basketball for that matter. WTF. Might as well watch reality tv or soap operas.
NASCAR draws the morbid who like to see crashes. Poker isn't a sport and any network who claims they are sports programming who runs it needs to have there broadcasting licence removed. As for basketball, the last 3 minutes of a game are all that matters. The rest of the action you can see at any playground complete with the obvious travels that happen on 70% of the shots that are taken to the hole.

Market the NHL to who? You get hockey because you like action or because you've played the game. Do people who watch car races or poker sound like they are looking for action?

My strategy to increase hockey popularity:
1. Build an ice rink for every high school in America.
2. Get the jocks to play hockey rather than football.
3. Hockey is now the popular sport.
