Good luck...first one to get it right gets best.

Volumes 1 and 2 of a two-volume set
of math books sit next to each other
on a shelf. They sit in their proper
order: Volume 1 on the left and
Volume 2 on the right. Each front and
back cover is inch thick, and the
pages portion of each book is 1 inch
thick. If a bookworm starts at the first
page of Volume 1 and burrows all the
way through to the last page of
Volume 2, how far will she travel?

Four inches, right?
No, wait... Two inches! From page 1 of volume 1, you go straight through the cover of volume 1, then the cover of volume 2, bringing you to the last page of volume 2.

Third guess: Since each front and back cover is an inch thick, does that mean the combined thickness of the front & back cover? If that is the case, the bookworm would have traveled 1 inch.

Still wrong I'm guessing?

5 inches - cover 1-> pages1 -> cover 1-> cover 2 -> pages 2 (that's the last page)

Joe Mkt gave the stunning answer - without an explaination. because of the fact the triagle is isosceles all of us understand that 2 factors are the comparable length. we are informed that those 2 factors are AC and BC. So Joe set up the equation to make the two lengths equivalent and then solved for y.

This depends on the position of the books..... i mean they can be side by side but with their covers facing you, side by side with their spines facing you....one books spine can be facking you and the other books open end can be facing you.... this would all affect the answer....

maybe im trying too hard lol
