Could you possibly make arrangements with staff to "split" the holidays-- where some ppl work on Christmas Day and others work on New Year's? This works best in a workplace where there are several ppl who do not celebrate Christmas. Once, I was in a similar situation (3 ppl in total) and one lady announced that she wasn't going to work from Dec 23-Jan 3 bc she needed Dec 23 and Jan 2 as travel days to get back to town and she didn't want to work Christmas or New Year's. In other words, she wanted to celebrate both holidays and didn't care if the 2 of us left couldn't get time off for at least one of the holidays. The 2 of us quickly put her in her place. Actually, in the US, Christmas Day IS a federal holiday and there is no mail service and all the govt offices are closed.

She sounds like one mean, mean boss! I work in a nursing home and we will get paid double pay for Christmas day and boxing day and New years day. Any other bank holiday is time and a half for us.
Check your legal rights with your union if you belong to one or Citizens advice. You could all join forces (all you staff) call a meeting with your boss and threaten not to work. But ALL of you ould have to do that.
Your boss sounds like scrooge! She needs to understand that most of us would rather be at home with family. What incentive is 5.52 an hour over Christmas. I'd go sick!
Trouble is it's the residents that would suffer in the long run if you did go sick..............

I work at Norwich Union (like most of the UK's population lol) and we get christmas off, but christmas overtime is atleast time and a half. Shame on your boss, is her name Scrooge by any chance? Haha

I don't know how it is in the UK, but in the US, Christmas is not a federal holiday and cannot become one as it's a religious holiday. So if someone has to work, they just have to deal with it. Since it's not a federal holiday, they cannot receive overtime pay for working on that day unless they're filling in for someone who cannot work for some reason. Even then, that's only after they've worked the maximum allowed hours for the week.

That's part of why I love working for my mom! We clean houses, and as unappealing as that is for many, it really is a great job. You get to pretty much set your schedule however you like, and you can still change it as needed. Also, the work environment is so laid back-no office, desks, phones, or dress code. And the best part...no annoying coworkers. :)

You don't mention the type of work that you do. Some jobs do require doing on christmas day and so they will argue that its part of the job.
HOWEVER, you work for scrooge herself. Use it as an incentive to go and get another job and better yourself!
