You're going to get a ton of suggested ages to start spoon feeding. However, ages will not tell you when your baby will be ready for it because all babies develop at different rates. What my children's peds have always told me is to watch for specific actions that they do: hold his chest off any surface and support his weight on his arms, push a spoon out with his tongue, enough control of his head to look around a room without it flopping down, can sit up if you support him, etc. There are a few more that I can't remember right off. But the best thing I can suggest is watch your baby, see what he can do and what he can't. By doing this, he'll tell you when he's ready for something new, like trying a spoon.

Really your suppose to wait untill 6 months to start solids but since you already have you could remove the cereal from the bottle and start attempting to spoon feed it instead at around 4 months or so. Although it might not work real well until a little later. Congrats on your baby.

The best way is to try and see. Don't try to sppon feed though unless he can hold his head without support. Start out with a tiny bit on the spoon bring it to his lips if he opens and smacks it around that's a sign he might be ready. Usally they say to wait until they are 5-6 months before introducing solids. I began giving my son soggy baby cereal on the spoon at 4 months.. He handled it well and was on solids at 5 months.

My pediatrician kind of left it up to me and baby when to start the spoon. He told me anytime between 4 and 6 months to start offering the spoon. I tried him at 4 1/2 months and he refused it. I just introduced him to spoon feeding at his own pace. Now, at 6 1/2 months, he can spoon feed himself. Wait until your son is at least 4 months old before you try the spoon. Introduce the spoon then but don't force him to use it. He'll pick up on it when he wants to . They'll only be this small once. No need to rush them.

Usually babies don't start on solids until 4-6 months. I'd wait until then because breast milk has a lot of nutrients and anti-bodies that the baby needs, and even formula has benefits until they're ready for solids.

Seeing as he already eats a little bit of cereal, he'll probably get used to it real quick, but don't rush him.

The link I've provided in sources seems to give lots of good information. If you're not in the UK, just ignore the references to the department of health etc, but the other info is still relevant.

For the future a great site for moms of newborns (and older) is WebMd.com - go to message boards - then Parenting boards.

Typically pediatricians say 4-6 mos for solids. Spoon feeding is a new thing for them so really you're training them to use their tongue correctly, more comes out than in at first. For that reason I'd suggest sticking to the 4 month rule. Both of mine started at about 4.5 months.

I am not a mommy, but have had a lot of practice with babies. I have seven nieces and nephews. I would say it is ok to spoon feed this baby now. Well you should only give the baby one piece at a time to see if he does ok with it. Then I would keep going. Also there is a gerber product that is cereal for babies. It makes it so the cereal desolves in your mouth. Hope I helped!

My daughter was 10 pounds at birth. I started feeding her rice cereal mixed with formula once a day at 3 months. It honestly helped her to sleep better and she took to it easily. I did ask my pediatrician what he thought about it before though.
