something went wrong with my hard drive and we had to get it replaced, in exchange the company takes back our old hard drive. i have been illegally downloading music would they find that on my hard drive? do they go through the hard drives they take back?

I would think that generally they find users who are sharing the most files, and request information about the user from their ISP (which they find out through the user's IP address).

I don't think your computer manufacturer cares whether you're downloading illegal things on your computer, and they're certainly not going to browse through it to check. Think how long it would take if they did that to every hard drive they got! Phew.

No. The authorities are only looking at people who UPLOAD music. I use LimeWire and only allow my available (upload) folder to contain a 70 year old song that is out of copyright. That stops me appearing as a freeloader but allows me access to all available music.
