why do some people on yahoo answers throw personal insults at one another? its ok having a bit of a banter but whats the point in writing upsetting things about people you don't know?

If the person has not warranted it then yes its wrong but if someone is deliberately being an idiot then they are going to get told.

For better or for worse, answers has a lot of young kids who troll for questions that they can simply antagonize the questioner.
Additionally, there are those out there who simply do not understand that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. These people honestly believe that by insulting you, your mind will see how just how 'stupid' your question really was, and by insulting you they have enlightened you.
These are the same people who think that yelling obscenities at a girl when she walks by a construction site, she will find them attractive.

Yahoo answers can also be a sounding board for people who've had a bad day...it makes them feel better when they've let off a bit of steam, i think we've all been guilty of it at some time, i wouldn't take anything personally, it's not as though they 'know' you.

Because it's easier to freak out at someone online who you don't know instead of some member of your family etc without repercussions. Welcome to the 20th Century disfunctional culture!
