Today I had auditions for our caberet in our school. With someone else I sang Mamma Mia, thinking we would get our amazing pianist, but we got our chorus teacher who sucks at it. Seriously. She totally ruined it in my opinion. We're used to having our notes be played in the piano part (as supposed to in the sheet music), so when that was missing/off tune, we went off. Basically, we were better off singing a capella. Oh my god, it just sounded terrible. Is it really just us or can a bad piano accompanianst really mess you up? Because i'm really pissed about this lol and I don't want to blame the wrong person just yet.

Of course a bad accompanist can ruin an audition, I've seen it happen. They play it too slow or too fast, but never in the wrong key... They play what's in front of them on the page as far as notes. You should know though that most pianists do not play the melody (what you sing), they play the background music. That may be what threw you off. When you practice with your regular accompanist that person may be playing the melody for you so that you know what you're singing. Most accompanists will play it as a performance piece which would be without the melody so that your voice is what is heard singing the melody, not the piano. Understand? It was likely just a misunderstanding of what you thought would happen when your music was played so now you'll know how to prepare better for next time. Once you know the song, have your rehearsal accompanist play it without the melody so that you can learn it the way it will be played for you by other pianists. Either that or bring your accompanist with you. That's generally allowed.

It's totally possible. I've auditioned for musicals with crappy piano backing and I ended up not getting the part.

I wouldn't tell the runner of the caberet that the chorus teacher ruined your song (teachers gossip, just like us), but ask for a redo. Say you were having an off-day or something.

I hate to tell you this but unless the piano was out of tune, or she was playing the song in the wrong key, it's you guys that were off and couldn't recover! You should have stopped the audition and had a few words with her. Better yet, since she wasn't the usual accompanist, you should have spoken to her beforehand and given her the key, style and tempo you had prepared!
