There is a book called "sunshine" by Robin McKinley. Many people don't know about it, because not only does it stand alone, but it's not the author's usual style, and so the people who do know who she is did not promote/recommend the book. But it is amazingly written, and the story is interesting.
Imagine a world where "Others" are rampant, and ready to destroy the human race. And those worst of the Others, vampires, who are almost impossible to destroy, and are gradually gaining the upper hand...
Imagine a girl, nicknamed "Sunshine", who is tired of the coffehouse where she works, and that whole coffee-house world, and goes to the lake, where noone ever goes, in search of something she doesn' even know...
Imagine this girl, captured by vampires, and chained in a ballroom with a halfstarved one, and that her only way out is to trust him against her instincts and everything she's ever believed...
Amazing book.

Susan Krinard has a series of good vampire books like Chasing Midnight...she also has a couple of werewolf series. Linda Lael Miller has written a Valerian Vampire series (Forever and the Night; For All Eternity; Time Without End; Tonight and Always). There are several fun Regency period vampire stories like Karen Harbaugh's The Vampire Viscount and the Devil's Bargain and The Vampire Viscount.
There is also a romance list of vampire stories here http://www.vampireromancebooks.com/ that has a LOT of authors and stories listed (with descriptions).
You may also want to read the classic story (based in part on Vlad the Impaler) - Dracula by Bram Stoker.

There's a great supernatural detective series called The Dresden Files. The hero, Harry, is a wizard, but he tangles with vampires *and* has a vampire ally of sorts, though the ally doesn't show up for a few books.
Mary Jane Davidson has a paranormal chic lit series called "Undead and ..." which is fun.
And if you like your blood served with grits, there's Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series. Her first book was fabulous - I haven't managed to read the rest of the series yet, though. Again, it is sort of chic lit/lighthearted as opposed to super-gory and dark.

There's a series of short novels by P.N. Elrod known as "The Vampire Files"...protagonist is an investigative journalist in 1930s Chicago who falls in love with a beautiful female vampire who subsequently disappears; when a disgruntled mobster has the journalist killed, he finds out that he's a vampire and seeks to a) get revenge on his Chicago mob killers and b) find the femme vampire with whom he fell in love. Fun stuff, with snappy noir dialogue and good characterizations.
