Ultima Online- Free Shard info?

Question

Here's my question. How do I play Ultima Online on one of the free shards. I'm looking for a PvP, difficult to advance shard. I used to play for years before the Age of Shadows but years later I am still itching to play.
What website do I go to? What software must I download? I know nothing about playing on the free shards whatsover. Most of all, is it safe?
Will greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

The easiest way is to go to UOGateway.com and get their front-end program. That will show you a list of something like 300 servers with a small bit about them. You can use it to visit them one at a time and flag the ones you like.

Once you pick one you can just edit the text file in the UO directory that says which servers to go to, and use your UO program directly.

There are also sites that list servers and something about them.
