I need to know how gas and dust get into space for a report I'm writing I can't find the answer anywhere...please help

Most of the gas was there from when the universe was first created.

It starts there. Space has lots of very large, very thin clouds of dust and gas. It always has. Astronomers spend a lot of their time and effort figuring out how some of it gets clumped together to make stars and planets.
