I was going to ask about bands who get better with each album, but decided to go the other way, so what bands won your heart with an amazing debut album, only to follow it up with an uninspiring second album.

Dim Blond:
I dunno, just kinda felt like trashing a few bands. Might save the other question for another day when I feel like celebrating some great bands.

What!!?!!? Sir, you have offended my honour, I challenge you to a duel. But seriously, what about songs like "Elephant" and "Coconut Skins", two of his best songs ("Coconut Skins" would probably be in my top 10 all time favourite songs!)?

Yeah, I've never been a huge Stone Roses fan, but their first album is definitely a lot better. Kind of the same case with a lot of 90s brit-pop bands.

I know a lot of people would agree with you, but I actually think "Antics" is the better record. Still, I can see where you're coming from.

Ha, I was drooling too in '89, although that was really more age related :)

In my lifetime, it would have to be The Stone Roses - Second Coming. There was so much insane hype regarding this band during the early 90's and much of it was deserved since their first album was stellar. Much like Oasis, this band was done in by their own inflated ego. I see Almond1966 agrees too, good call!

The very first song I heard from these guys was One Love around 1989. I was drooling even before I realized the rest of the world was too.

stereophonics-word gets around the first album hasnt got 1 bad track, amazing album. second album performance and cocktails was a disappointing follow up, few good tracks but most of the songs arnt even worthy b sides.

i also agree with coldplay, i saw them when shiver had just broke into the top 40 at the smallest venue ever and met chris martin, remember thinking this band r gonna be special. parachutes was quality then after that i think they came predictable! does anyone know what happened to the band that headlined with them that day, they were called terris and i bought there album but then never heard anything on them, highly recommend them to anyone.

I cant think of any bands but one artist stands out on this subject and its Keysia Cole. The first album was soooo good but the second only has 2 or three ok songs

I'm definitely agreeing with the choice of The Stone Roses. The first album to me was brilliant but 6 years later when they decided to get their arses back into the studio, the result was bleck.

Not sure how many of you appreciate The Sounds ... but their second album was soo commercially produced it made me gag. For a second there I almost thought we may have had the second Blondie or something (well, maybe that's an exaggeration) but I was seriously expecting something far better from them in their sophomore effort - guess I was wrong :(

The Strokes - brilliant first album, "Is This It?". Second album was an absolute dog.

EDIT:

Terry Tibbs: While you're right about Pulp being a one decent album band, Different Class was their 5th album.

Stone Roses.
I interviewed them for the student newspaper in Manchester in 1987. I had a copy of their demo tape. They were fabulous. Second Coming was just dull.

By the way, Different Class was NOT Pulp's first album by a long way. Look it up!

Razorlight.

'Up All Night' is a really good album, full of confidence and quirkiness and loads of really good tunes.

'Razorlight' is bland and uninspiring. All the things that made them good are gone.

Johnny Borrell was always an arrogant tosspot, but it used to be that the songs redeemed him.
