No iris don't like to be crowded but they do become so after just 2-3 years, thus the need to dig and divide often. However, they will tolerate remaining in the ground with nonfunctioning rhizome sections until they run out of soil.

As for what likes to be crowded.........hmmmm. If space is an issue, you can double up. Put in spring bulbs and put a flowering groundcover over the top that doesn't need a lot of water during the summer when the bulbs below want it dry or drier. You can grow a rose on a trellis and then a light clematis that will cling to the rose canes. Research how perennials grow, some all but disappear in summer heat (Oriental poppies) allowing you to grow another perennial close by to hide the fading foliage. Another camo trick is to plant daylilies in front of your daffodils. As the daff foliage sticks up collecting the sun's rays, it looks very similar to daylily foliage.

Lilies, bird of paradise, bamboo, poinsettia, daffodils, canna lilies. How do you intend to use them?
