I have Bellsouth DSL at 10mbps but is it always on? The reason I ask is because everytime I turn on my computer, I still have to click Bellsouth dsl and sign in. Of course, the sign in does only take like a second but I thought all types of broadband internet were literally "always on".

No, it's always available, but when you turn your computer off there is no longer an active connection so it disconnects unless and until you boot up again, and then it will ask you to sign in and establish contact again. If you never turned off your computer, it would indeed be literally always on.

This is generally true..

But some phone companies offer this service with your same phone line. So when you sign off, your phone line is restored and is no longer being used by the internet.

Heard of a service in Nebraska or somewhere there that uses the same method.

You answered your own question.

I have a DSL

Then you mention Broadband.

Different animals.

Broadband is a direct cable connection with your provider. Always on and ready.

DSL goes through your phone line. It comes on when you ask for it.

If you use a router or LAN connected modem, this will normally hold the connection for you. For a usb connected modem, it behaves like a dialup connection.
