I doubt very much that you can get it back to "like brand new" again. The reason I say this is, since you gotten the computer, I'm sure you've added things to it, printers and the like.
Not to mention, anti-virus and other software programs.
All these thing take time to load when you start your computer. There's no way of getting around it, unless you go into task manager and disable some programs from loading upon startup.
I suggest you perform a simple disk defrag on your hard drive first. If files on your computer are all mixed up, then your computer takes that much longer to sort thru them when it starts up.
If certain programs seem to run slow, you might try adding more system memory. Games and video's require alot of memory.
I also suggest downloading a free program called CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) that once installed, it cleans your hard drive and registry of alot of useless junk files that have accumulated over time.

there are a few reasons why a computer gets bogged down after a few months of use. mostly human error. loading software incorrectly,( using the quick start tray option when installing software uses memory and causes slow start ups). I always advise people to be very aware of the software you are loading and options given by the installer. read each option as it comes up. make sure your software is from a good source and can be updated! for Internet use of course use a good spy-ware program and virus checker. lots of free stuff on the internet. AVG-free is good. malware will slow you down pretty quickly. I make a habit of keeping my OS partition small. 20 gigs. I reformat maybe once a year or twice a year. and I don't store anything of value on my OS drive. reformatting and reinstalling your software occasionally is good. it reminds you want you have and what you really want. kind of a hassle but worth it. in your case i would reload windows. if you have a proprietary, (store bought), then call your customer support and see if they can help you reformat and reinstall xp. or use the disc's that come with most store bought computers. hope this helps--

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Here is my checklist which I follow every two weeks:
1. Set wallpaper and screensavers to blank or none — they run continuously in the background and use memory.
-----right-click on the desktop, select Properties
-----click the screensaver tab, on the left where it says "screensaver," select none.
-----click the desktop tab, for background, select none
2. Review your start menu – remove anything you don’t need on a daily basis — load games, etc. on an as-needed basis.
-----click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu
-----click the Start Menu tab
-----select a program you do not want to load at Startup, then click remove.
-----Caution -- do not touch anything you are not sure of or you will mess up your computer royally.
3. From Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options: delete cookies, delete files (offline), and clear history. (You can also set days to store history to 0.)
----- These actions will clear your computer’s cache. (For a description of cache, go to http://help.yahoo.com/l/ph/yahoo/mail/access/access-27210.html )
4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag at least every two weeks (the more frequently they are run, the less time they take).
-----These can be found in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
5. Periodically, click Start, Programs, Run — then type ipconfig renew
(that’s ipconfig space renew).
6. Optional: Speed vs Goodies — in the Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings — you can have visual effects or let Windows select the best options. I am using “Best Performance.” Your choice.
These things should increase speed and free up memory as much as possible.

Did your computer come with another CD that says Windows XP SP2. If so use that one. I think you are not using the Service Pack 2 CD.
