when solving two-dimensional problems, how do physicist split them up?

I cant find the answer in my text book for some reason... I will choose best answer.

I'm not sure what you mean. What do you mean by "split the up."

If you are talking about two degrees of freedom, I'd probably do a vector analysis or trig depending on the problem. Could you add a little more information?
