Take the whole number and multiply it by the denominator of the fraction... then add the numerator. This answer is the numerator of your fraction. The denominator is the same as the mixed number. If the mixed number is negative, keep it out for later and don't include it in the computation.

Using your example of -5 1/2....
5*2+1 = 10 + 1 = 11

So... -5 1/2 = -11/2

You can't change it into a whole number. However, you can put it as an improper fraction. To do that, you would multiply the whole number you do have (5) times the denominator (2) and add the numerator (1) = -11/2

You could also put it into decimal form. To do that, you just divide the numerator (when in an improper fraction) by the denominator = -5.5

To change it to a positive number, just multiply everything in the equation by -1, if it is in an equation.

I wasn't really sure what you were asking, but I hope this helps!

in a mixed number fraction the first number stays the same, to change a fraction into a whole number you divide the top number by the bottom number.
-5 1/2
1/2=.5
-5.5 is your answer

lol u multiply 2 by -5, then add 1, then divide that fraction.

like the answer to this would be.......

2x-5=-10
-10+1=-9
then the fraction would be -9/2 b/c u keep the same denominator.
then u divide -9 by 2 and that's -4.5

*another example*
Fraction: 2 3/5

instructions!
1) 5x2=10
2) 10+3=13
3) the fraction would be 13/5 b/c u keep same denominator.
4) then u divide 13 and 5. 13/5=some #(lol i dont have my calculator with me.)

i hope this helps!

*EDIT!*
why is everyone saying -10+1=-11? -10+1=-9!!!!!!!!-9!!!!
trust me, my answer is right, do it on a calculator!!!

You would mulitply it by a negative, because a negative mulitplied by another negative is a positive. For example -6 * -1 = 6.

Think of it this way:

There are two kinds of students in two groups; one group are good kids, and one group are bad kids.
If a bad and a good kid sit next to each other, they will have a bad time, therefore the answer will be negative, because a negative mulitiplied by a positive is negative, and it is also the same when a bad kid sits next to a good kid.
On the other hand, if a good kid sits with a good kid, or a bad kid sits with a bad kid, they will have a good time, and the answer will be positive because they are the same type of people. In other words, a positive multiplied by a positive is a positive, and a negative multiplied by another negative is a positive.

I know, it's confusing, but I hope it helped a little if that's what you're wondering!

positive and negative numbers are something totally different from mixed numbers and fractions!

-4 ,4 and 2 1/2, 5/2

Are you rounding?
-5.5 would be -6? Ignore the negative and round as normal!

what u would do is keep the -5. then divide the top number of the fraction (numerator) divided by the bottom part of the fraction (denominator). in this case you'd divide 1 by 2 soo... 1/2=.5 so your answer would be -5.5

you cant change it to 6 or something. if you want to make it negative, just put a negative sign. it's really simple.
Ex. before: 5 1/2 After: - 5 1/2

To solve it, simply multiply the whole number with the denominator then its product with the numerator. Be sure to pay attention to the plus [+] or minus [-] signs.
To change the signs, it depends of the given numbers. Negative x positive is equal to negative.
Positive x negative = negative
Positive x positive = positive
Negative x negative = postive

You simply divide 1 by 2 and then add that (.5) to the -5 you already have. You answer is -5.5
