Seeing a ghost is a real human experience. I suspect that ghosts associated with hauntings, crisis apparitions and seeing your deceased relatives may all have different explanations. The term apparition used to mean the visual image of person that you know to not be physically present at your location was used as far back as 1882 in order to attempt to be more precise than the word ghost.
If a ghost is the surviving spirit of a person, a recorded memory impressed in the atmosphere, or access to a collective consciousness (all ideas to explain ghosts) is something that science has not yet determined.
Dreams and emotions are real and do not posses a physical structure so are ghosts material objects? most experiences suggest they are not.
However, quantum physics has proved that most material objects are also mostly empty space so....

I do not think of them as ghosts, but as "spirits" which I guess is just another name for an apparition. I definitely believe that spirits do exist and that we live in a spiritual world. I am baseing this on personal experience. When I was a girl of about 7 or 8 yrs old, I had a friend of mine staying at my house while her mother was out of town. We both were awakened in the middle of the night to noise coming from the kitchen. The sound was that of silverware being rattled. My friend was frightened but I assured her that it was just my mother who was more than likely preparing my father's lunch before he left for work, or perhaps making him breakfast. We decided to get up and go into the kitchen to talk to her. The house we lived in was a very old house and my bedroom was located off the entry way hallway. At the end of the hallway was a big diningroom and on the other side of the diningroom was the kitchen. Next to the kitchen window stood a table that had a drawer in it that held the silverware. As we came into the diningroom my friend and I were laughing and talking when suddenly my friend froze in her tracks and turned quiet pale. I asked her what was wrong, but she couldn't seem to speak. Her eyes were fixed straight ahead into the kitchen. I looked in the direction she was looking and saw a ghostly figure standing in front of the table that held the silverware. A face could not be seen, but it had the form of a man, but appeared almost mist like. I had the feeling it was staring back at me. My friend fled the room leaving me standing there alone. It took me a moment or two to be able to make my feet move. Once I returned to the room, my friend confirmed that she had seen the same thing that I had seen. I have also had other experiences with apparitions as well. I now have an interest in such shows as "hauntings" and "Ghost Hunters". I cannot back this up but it is my belief that when people die, their spirit leaves their body and sometimes they do not move on, but stay here.

I believe that ghosts are energy left over from someone. I think they can exist at many different levels for many reasons. If something is unresolved in ones life when they die, the person may stick around. I really thought THE SIXTH SENSE had an interesting perspective. perhaps they dont always know they are dead? Hope u have seen it. I think that people leave energy behind in places that are special to them. The energy I am speaking of can come in different forms which are seen heard by mortals. Maybe it could be their voice or what about a smell?
A couple instances come to mind.... stories friends told me. Some convincing evidence presented to me. IM me, thegroovemaniac, at yahoo for stories.

yes ghosts exist, they are the poor souls that are trapped between earth and heaven. the souls that make it to heaven come back to visit too and there are angels too. I have proof from my 14 month old. Since he was old enough to smile,
laugh, wave and point, he'd do all these things to what seemed like nothing. But when I'd take a picture in towards where he was pointing or smiling or waving at, there were always orbs in the picture. Sometimes just one, sometimes up to about 7. I should have printed them out. They are on my camera and I have so many pictures on there it would take forever to go through and find! I believe they are Angels or our loved one's coming to visit. My son now pushes the buttons on my phone and alot of times he pushes 711 which is my great grandma and grandpa's house address, they are passed away now.

I have always thought that ghosts were just the product of someones imagination or paranoia, but now I am not so sure. My dad died about 3 1/2 years ago and I missed him so much after he passed. I had three unusual events happen to me right after he died that has always made me wonder. My car alarm went of for no reason. At first I chalked that up to kids outside, then a record (yes a round plastic record!!) started playing on my record player that was in a cabinet with the door shut. Lastly, I was sitting at my dining room table when a glass vase just cracked and broke in front of me. No one had touched it, it just broke. After that I had a dream that I was crying and my dad was there. I told him I missed him so much and he told me, in this dream, he was fine and I should not worry. He was in a good place. After that, I never had any of those incidents happen. But to this day, I think it was my dad saying good bye. So for me, I hope it was the ghost of my dad. It was not scary, it was actually a reassuring thing to me. Anyway, that is my story.

Not sure, but I like watching Ghost Hunters on the Sci Fi channel 9p.m. Est. Tonight is going to be a new episode about a house in Seattle haunted by a lady, I think.

No, ghosts do not exist. There's no evidence - Ouija boards can be explained through the ideomotor effect, and bumps in the night can be explained by houses cooling after the sun goes down. People go ghost hunting with electronic devices that don't pick up anything objective. Ghosts survive only through hearsay and legends.

I no they do not its all in your state of mind; alot of people would like to have an after life that is some what the same as this so they can go on live just as they had before they died.
They want an after life because they don't want to give everything up.
Just as rain clouds don't start out as rain clouds, they change, the process is ocean water of what ever water, evaporation process, gases and water molecules create clouds and they become full and release, which makes us have rain.
That's why we don't see just water in the sky or an ocean like we see on land and that because we have to go through changes, that's life.

I never used to until I had some creepy experiences after my daughter was born. She is named after my late grandmother. I had a picture of my grandmother in her room and when I would go in her room it would be completely turned around. There was nobody else there to do this and no other explanation for this. Someone told me once that spirits can do things like this to let you know that they are there. Several other things happened at this time as well.

I saw a ghost once...and it changed me forever. my dad and my sister were with me...both saw it too...so i knew i wasn't crazy.
we were walking our dog at night in autumn in boise. leaves are everywhere. we can't take one step without loud crunching noises from the leaves underfoot. we are approaching a bench underneath a street light and an old lady is sitting on the bench...only she is kind of glowing in a blue aura. i assume its the street light (even though the light doesn't look blue at all).
as we get closer, something just doesn't seem right....and there is a loud bark right behind us. we all turn to see if there is another dog there (even my dog turns her head)...there is no dog...and when we look back, the old lady is gone. it was unusual how me, my dad, my sister, and my dog turned our heads in unison....it wasn't a long look back either....like a quick double take. no time for this lady to go anywhere. plus, she was OLD....looked in her 80s. and we heard no leaves crunching.
we turned around and ran home all totally creeped out. i still get chills when i think about it.
