What is the importance of Elrond's farewell words to the Company? As you read ahead, what importance do these words take on?
He basically said that Frodo is the ring-bearer and the others are there to accompany him, to help him along the way, that he is responsible for not letting anyone else handle the ring.
I don't know the importance of his words...could someone please help me with this question?

Each of the others had their own destiny.
Elrond knew that Aragorn and Boromir in particular had other responsibilities that would tear them apart if they had to stick with Frodo. So did Gandalf.

The ring was evil, and would corrupt those who touch it. Hobbits could resist the evil longer than others.

I'm amazed that I can remember so much after all these years. I guess the books really made an impression on me. Maybe I should read them again.

The ring seized hold of whatever person "held" it. Bilbo Baggins liked to put it on once in awhile to appear and disappear. Elrond warned people that any one but Frodo could not be trusted with custody of the ring.
