Okay, I am a middle school boy. In school, we have to do a different sport each season. In the winter they generally offer basketball, hockey, swimming, and strength & conditioning. However, this year, they made 2 new offerings, squash and yoga. Today we had to sign up and I thought yoga might be cool to do. I was the only boy to sign up, but I don't care about that (my good friend was the only boy in swimming 2 years in a row.) My concern is not getting made fun of, because I have a great school community, where kids generally don't make fun of each other for stuff like that. Well, I came home today and told my mom that I was, and she was just like ok, but it seemed like she thought it was a bad idea. I'm not very into yoga or anything, I'm just not very athletic and I thought it might be cool. Do you think I should switch my sport or not? Would it be too girly? What do you think? I personally don't think it is a very big deal, but what are your opinions?

There is nothing wrong with trying new things to become a more well-rounded individual. Your classmates are likely too immature to realize this, so I suggest that you play up the fact that you're the only guy in a class full of girls. Gee, where they stupid not to take the class or what!?! That's a viewpoint that they can understand... and probably be jealous of especially if the girls in the class respond well to you.

There is nothing "girlie" about strengthening and increasing flexibility that you can then use in your other sports! Also, there is the added plus of using the breathing techniques for stress relief. My son's coach had him take a few yoga classes to help increase concentration and focus, but he was there with some friends. If you are really concerned, try to find someone to do it with you---there are worse places for a teenage boy to be than in a class FULL of teenage girls :o)

Have fun!

Stick with it!! Trust me. Yoga is a little bit of everything!
My mythology professor had one of the BEST BODIES!! I have ever seen! (Oh, yeah.) He was a devoted Yoga disciple. He SWORE it was all Yoga!
I did some looking into... Yoga is definitely NOT for sissies. It's hard work, done right. It also is a mind and body tuner.
I say GO FOR IT! }:>

No. Stick with your chosen activity.

Yoga is excellent for strengthening, toning and limbering up your muscles and will prepare you for when you return to your other sports.

Tons of atheltes I.e.: football, basketball and hockey players do yoga - the thought of it being "girly" is so passe.

Good for you for doing what you want!! Be an individual.
