I recently located an old Windows 98 SE and I wanted to hook it up to the internet at our house. I have DSL and I have an old modem with the installation CD. I tried to install the drivers for the modem, but at the end it says it cannot receive a DSL signal (the light on it won't light up). I checked the phone line and used different ones, but nothing happened. I am using the splitter and ethernet hook-ups with no router.

So I was wondering if there is a special way to hook up multiple PC's on the same DSL line?

Well first of all Windows 98SE will connect to the internet fine as long as it has a Network Card. The cards I use for 98 are the 3com cards since 99.9% of the time it just finds them and installs it once that is loaded and you have a Network Card working the second thing you have to look at now is the DSL modem make sure you are using a DSL modem that was given to you by your ISP if not you need to make sure you have your VCI VPI set up correctly in the modem easy answer just get a modem from your ISP once you got sync on the modem and you know you got a connection and you want to put more then one computer on the internet you would need to get a router if you just have the computers in the same room just go with a nice wired netgear router they have them on tigerdirect for like 10bucks I will give you the link below now if you want hook up a wirless connection go with a netgear wirless G that way if you frineds come over they can get online as well but yes what your trying to do should work now if you have one of those older dsl modems that you are trying to hook up via usb stop more trouble then its worth I have embarq for my dsl they sent me a brand new 660 modem plug it in good to go I have the same modem in my computer shop does a great job but I do not know what isp you have so I do not know what they are sending out for the modems.

Without a router you would have to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), requiring you to enable it on both computers and then to designate one as the primary computer. Honestly, though, I *strongly* discourage you from doing this.
Instead, invest in a router. Not only will this increase your computer protection, but it will make connecting multiple computers easier.

You need a router/modem, this replaces your existing modem. If you try to connect 2 modems, one blocks the other, or your connection dies.
