"In the early years of professional baseball the term "manager" generally was used to refer to what today is a general manager.. "Team Captain" usually referred to the bench manager. An 1876 National League rule barred managers from the players bench. Bench managers were accepted by the 1890s...Brooklyn's Charles Ebbets was not alone in 1898 in refusing to pay what he considered the excess baggage of a bench manager. He took over the club himself for most of the season."
While this doesn't exactly answer the question, it does point to a kind of blurry line that existed between general managers and bench managers in the early days of baseball. If general managers did run their teams on the field (and it appears that some did), it may be the case that the title manager just stuck, even after they'd given up those duties to bench coaches.
I hope this is the information you were looking for. It's been provided by a real live reference librarian in Central Ohio.

In baseball, there are coaches for each specific aspect of the game (hitting coach, pitching coach, etc.). The manager's job isn't to coach the players, but to manage the game and make important decisions. The coaches coach, and the manager manages.

Most of the time, if a batter does well against a pitcher and the next batter up has a disadvantage against the pitcher, he may be walked intentionally in a situation like a close game. You as the manager, don't want your team to give up extra bases or a home run, but play the percentage game as well as matching up righties with other right handed batters. It's a useful strategy in many situations.

Umm, what about basketball or football coaches. They have a number of coaches. Do they call their coaches coach A, B, and so on? Just because baseball has pitching coaches, batting coaches.. They can't call the manager "head coach"? I guess the title of "manager" makes them feel better about their OUTRAGEOUS salaries.

This is a good question, and I don't know why this is, and also if you notice, but I really don't need an answer tol do this, but you see the manger wearing thier baseball team's unfirom, where in other sports, you see the head coach in a suit and tie.
