Nationally televised games are on Versus throughout the season, and on NBC during weekends starting in January. Most of the other games are covered by regional sports networks (RSNs) such as Fox Sports Net. If you receive CBC, there are a good number of games shown there as well.

For hometown teams (I'm assuming yours is the Washington Capitals) there should be a local affiliate that carries most of the games for your team. Games that are televised nationally are carried on Versus and on NBC (though the latter broadcasts don't start until January, I think).
Versus is a bit difficult to find, since most cable companies don't include it as part of their basic or expanded package; I had to get digital cable to obtain it. As much as I don't like ESPN, the NHL needs to get back on it, and as much as they'd like to deny it, ESPN's programming quality and credibility are nowhere near where it was in the mid-90s, and it would benefit tremendously by having the rights to NHL broadcasts once again.

Well there are many Television Channel's that Hockey ios Broadcasted on.
To list some;
TSN
CBC
VS
SportsNet.
Every home town has their own pay channel for their team. (Ex. Toronto has Leafs TV [LTV] and Calgary has Flames Pay Per View [FPPV].)
It all depends on where you live.

Versus. It will also be on NBC starting in January. MSG is the network that broadcasts Ranger games.

Comcast sports net in the DC area. Also look for MASN. There a few games on there. If you are in DC you would not get CBC(its Canadian). I doubt you even get sports net with just basic cable.
