There are lots of rankings that you can look at -- but almost everyone agrees that Harvard is the best university in the world -- not just the US.
But there are lots that are close. MIT and Cal Tech are better for engineering and science. Yale, Princeton, Chicago, Duke and Stanford are very close in quality to Harvard. UC-Berkeley, University of Virginia and University of Michigan are the top public universities.
US News ranks US schools. I've included the link below. They usually put Harvard at the top. Every once and awhile they shake things up and put Princeton or Yale at the top. This year, it is Princeton.
The second link is a ranking of the best universities in the world. Harvard is at the top. Stanford, Berkeley and MIT are the other US schools that they put in the top five.

it depends usually on which progam you would like to study. some think the ivy league schools are better but if there is a college or university that has more research in that field then i say it is better

Yale, no question about it. Even the other Ivies are secondary in comparison.
