I need help for history. Who invented the gramophone or anyone who invented anything close to what we call a telephone today? The evolution of the telephone from the earliest forms to the most recent.

Thomas Alva Edison invented the gramophone. This consisted of wax cylinders with a needle set into the spinning cylinder to vibrate and carry the sound out of a "big horn." Later, Victor or RCA Victor invented the Victrola, in which a needle rested on a groove in a 12-inch spinning disc (78 rpm) made of shellac (black, hard, brittle).

When I was a young man, managers used Dictaphones. These were voice recording machines that managers used to dictate letters. My job was to put the wax cyclinders through a "shaving" machine to smooth the cylinders and get them ready for use again.

The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The first telephone conversation was between Bell and an assistant named Watson. Sitting in one room, Bell telephoned to Watson in the other, "Come here, Watson! I want you!"

My mother was a telephone operator in Chicago about 1925. In those days, a person picked up a phone, and an operator asked, "Number please?" (They pronounced in "Numbah plee-ahs?") My mother worked in the Superior exchange. If the person wanted a number in the same exchange, okay. But if the person wanted a number in a different exchange (Michigan, Erie), then my mother had to plug into a central line. There, every operator was trying to put through calls to different exchanges. So my mother learned to say into her mouthpiece, "Supe! Supe! Supe!" Until the central operator grew exasperated and finally said, "Superior! Give your number!" My mother gave the number, and the call went through.
