Yes, the Moon occults Venus occasionally. The most recent time was in June. The next opportunity to see Venus occulted is March 5th 2008.

Yes. It is called an occultation. Every year the January issue of Sky and Telescope Magazine lists all the occultations for the coming year. Most public libraries have those magazines with back issues.

the moon is approx. a quarter of a million miles away from earth.

the minimum distance venus is from the earth is 25 million miles.
