I really don't think any of them are ready for a major, but the first might be Ivanovic or Jankovic. Hantuchova is a tour veteran, but her game isn't strong enough to go through 7 rounds to win a major. Ivanovic, Jankovic, Chakvetadze and Vaidisova are still very young and they still have many ways to go before putting them in the mix for winning a slam. Petrova is somewhat of a veteran and she's still young, but she doesn't have the mental fortitude to win a grand slam. She has become inconsistent, as well as injured far too often to be a slam contender. When Petrova was No. 3 in the world and healthy, she may have had a shot, possibly at the French.
Overall, these players aren't mentally or physically ready to win the grand slams. It would only happen, if the draw became very lopsided or all the big players suffered injuries. It takes a lot to go through Justine, Lindsay, Maria, Venus and Serena, in order to win a major.

I'd have to say Jelena Jankovic, BUT she HAS to improve that serve! If her aggressive game gets improved by much in the off-season, then she may be No.1 next year, because it's a great combination: very aggressive but very good defense. If Jankovic had to win somewhere I'd have to pick the French Open, because she's a classic counterpuncher; perfect for clay. She has to get through Justine Henin though.
Ana Ivanovic is a strong contender but she's still inconsistent at the moment, and gets overpowered by Henin and the Williams sisters. I heard a commentator say that she loses whenever the player on the other side of the net has a bigger personality, and that would be the Williams sisters. Henin has a better game. Ivanovic doesn't move well, too.
I somehow don't see Anna Chakvetadze winning a major, although I think she has the capabilities. She has many problems mentally, so she has to improve that first.
Daniela Hantuchova will never win a singles Grand Slam (she has a career grand Slam in mixed!) because she's already a veteran (crazy, isn't it, at 24!) and she doesn't have what it takes to trouble the best. She'll reach a couple of quarterfinals and maybe a semi.
Nadia Petrova's golden chance came last year but the injury TOTALLY WRECKED her ambitions! She was the best clay-courter last year (beating Justine Henin!) but ever since she hasn't won a match at Roland Garros. She can't win in the other majors.
Nicole Vaidisova definitely has the talent, but she's injured for some times this year, and have you ever noticed that whenever she's seeded No. 1 at a tournament she loses in the first round?
Soo.. My CONCLUSION is that either Jankovic or Ivanovic will be the first to win a major.

Ivanovic perhaps. But she is a choker.
Jankovic perhaps. She is more mentally tough, and maybe if Henin or the Williams are not around, she has a chance.
I think the best chance for most of these dark horses is for the field to weaken eg when Kuznetsova won the US open a few years back.
I honestly will be surprised is Chakatak, Hunchbackover and company ever win a grandslam.

The only two that has a chance is Ivanovic and Jankovic. Probably the French. I would have to say Ivanovic.

probably jankovic but she's got a mental weakness. vaidisova does well at grand slams and probably will still improve.
ivanovic has never even won a set agains justine or the williams sisters so i'm not sure about her chances.

Jankovic because of the fact that she has gotten to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam a few times now.

It'll be hard for all of them to win a major, since we still have Henin, Williams sisters etc. But I guess it'll be Jankovic / Ivanovic who'll win first, but I don't know where, but it won't be Roland Garros, since Henin plays soooo well on clay, especially in Roland Garros :)
