aero_eng: How patronising! Obviously the notion offends you. Pity you have no imagination and feel such a need to put down those that have, and if you have bothered to read more than a few lines, you would know I have quoted from reliable, reputable sources. How sad you only believe in rockets & combustion in this day and age!

You know, a while back a space mission, cheaper than any other in the history of space missions begun, it would employ solar wind. the space ship, the size of a a loaf of bread, would unfold and create Massive (with a capital) wings, using solar wind it would orbit Earth, pickup speed (it would be like a snowball effect) and fling itself outside our solar system much faster than standard rockets.

It blew up a few seconds on takeoff, it seems they were really thrifty with the project. but i think it has the potential to grow and usher in a new age of exploration

Gillian -

I'm afraid you are mistaken. It is indeed rocket science, and the link that you directed me to is unfortunately crammed with tirades from someone (you?) who has no understanding of any of it. Please lighten up, take a deep breath, and decide where you want to go - somewhere where you can succeed. It's not going to be in the area of spacecraft design. It is true that there are serious private efforts going on to enter the field, but what you refer to is not serious and is not even slightly competent. It simply has no technical merit. You need technical merit to get above 1,000 feet without killing yourself, and space is much higher and more difficult. Good luck. You're gonna need it.

Wow... someone is telling us how to build affordable spacecraft! They fly faster than those of NASA. They fly safer than those of NASA! They can be refueled at the local gas station - lead free only, please!

What is wrong with this picture? Nothing if you still believe in fairy tales or like to take magic mushrooms. But if you don't... well...

All spacecraft are affordable. Some people can afford bigger and better ones than others.

These guys are doing it, for real.

Other private ventures are not that far behind SpaceX.
