I started at university studying business economics, and the first semester involves principles of microeconomics and maths for business and economics. The thing is, due to me not having the greatest mathmatical background beforehand, i seem to be falling behind already and just not understanding most of the concepts at all.

The lecturer moves at like 200 miles an hour which doesn't help at all, and seems to explain things as if we are supposed to already know it. I am starting to get stressed out, as it just seems to be equation after equation.

Does anyone who is is studying or has studied economics before feel the same way as i do, or did you grasp it straight away? Was you puzzled at first?

I look around the lecture hall (which has about 150 people) and is as though every other person understands it all and i'm the only one that doesn't. Do you think most people are having trouble, or am i the only one?

Also, in school we hardly did any algebra (believe it or not), or i didn't listen too much, so my algebra is ****, which is probably why i am struggling with the equations.

It is not so much hard as confusing when you first encounter it, because it is a new way of thinking about the world and a new vocabulary so it is like listening to a lecture in a foreign language. I had a very good math background, but was still somewhat confused by a teacher that was trying to make it non mathematical. If you put in some extra effort to learn the precise definition of the terms , supply demand marginal etc, it will help a lot because many words have a different meaning in economics than they do in everyday language.

You really made me smile. :)

Dear My brother is having the same problem with economics.
No, you are not the only person having prob. understanding Economics. There must be many others too who have some problems understanding various concepts of economics but they simply don't express it so, take it easy ok? :)

See, Economics is basically a very interesting subject. All you need to do is to study economics on daily life basis. Basically economics is involved with life. Demand Supply, it all has to do with our needs and wants right? if we demand for say like sock then supply would be there, we are paying for it so its our expense and the supplier's revenue or income. Right? then if lets say its cold and demand for socks increases, then the prices will also increase because now the suppliers have to supply more so they will charge more,,, right?

So its all about life... and factors involved in it.

Yes it is hard. I took by bachelor (Indonesia and Singapore), master (Holland) and PhD (Italy) in Economics.

Is it worth it? you bet.

it seem that you are in bachelor level right now. I suggest that you read books that really show the role of economics in life such as Freakonomics, Undercover Economist, Naked Economics and Economic Naturalist.

Hope that you will soon captivated by its beauty. Every rose has its thorn.
