Benjamin Franklin said that he who sacrifices his liberty for security deserves neither.True liberty is the freedom to make your own decisions and then to live up to and be responsible for your own decisions.People in the old Soviet Union did not make their own decisions, they were made by the party.People in Myanmar(Burma) do not make their own decisions, except where to hide from their own government.

The question, in my opinion, should be: How do you balance freedom and security?
If there is no security, no safety, but only danger everywhere, you cannot be free to do what you would choose. So, if you allow everybody to do whatever they choose, having complete freedom, a lot of them will probably choose to victimize or exploit others, and those others lose their freedom.
On the other hand, if you try to eliminate every possible chance of injustice by regulating every action, this will result in a lot of injustice too. By trying to micro-manage society, people lose opportunities and choices they should have.
The reason I give up some freedoms sometimes, is to avoid losing even more. I should have the right to walk around the town alone at night; but I don't because I could lose more than I'm willing to risk, for that small pleasure.
Still, the choice is mine; there is no law saying I can't take the risk if I choose to, and under some circumstances I would.
As a nation, we always have to decide how much safety (security) we want, and how we can get it with the least loss of freedom. These aren't individual choices, but they are made by our elected officials. If the country allows too much freedom to our enemies, we may end up with very little freedom for ourselves, because our enemies will take it from us. Yet if we enforce greater security measures, we may be lessening our own freedoms somewhat.
In this world there is no such thing as pure freedom or pure security (safety); there is always some kind of balance between them.

Freedom is the most important thing in the world.
security invades personal space such as being monitored on phone calls or in a chat zone to prevent a crime making it so you watch what you say or type more carefully instead of just saying whatever you want without having to worry about it.
