The anti-Freedom Right better answer this question. They want Liberty for themselves as long as no one else enjoys it.

Last year's Supreme Court Term was a difficult one for civil liberties. The Court limited the ability of local officials to address the problem of segregated schools, upheld the authority of Congress to ban an abortion procedure, made it more difficult to challenge the use of taxpayers funds to promote religion, and restricted student free speech rights.

One-third of all the Court’s cases last Term were decided by a 5-4 vote, and Justice Kennedy was in the majority in every 5-4 case. More than ever, therefore, Justice Kennedy is a critical swing vote on an increasingly conservative Court.

A summary of all of the Court's civil liberties-related cases from the 2006 Term is online at:

In the 2007 Term, which begins on October 1, the focus will once again be on the "war on terror." The Court has already agreed to decide whether the Guantánamo detainees can be deprived of any meaningful right to challenge the lawfulness of their detention without charges or trial. In addition, the ACLU has asked the Court to review a lower court decision that effectively shields the CIA’s program of so-called "extraordinary rendition" from any judicial scrutiny.

it started out as a good group that had a good mission, and was vigilant in protecting it, but now it has degenerated into a mess
what do i have against the ACLU?

thier hypocrisy, recently a school REQUIRED thier students to study islam, and read the Quran, the ACLU stayed silent, if a school tried to do that with christianity, there would be no quieting them.

The ACLU's PRO BONO (free) legal representation of the most despicable group in America today, the North American Man Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) a group that advocates adult men raping young boys, and provides its members with way to avoid getting caught after doing so.

i do not believe that the ACLU cares about civil liberties anymore, just advancing thier anti american agenda on the country.

AAAHHHH Kelly B., Gal you do have a way of asking questions !!
Another of your responders asked a similar question about the ACLU, just a few days ago, I had the opportunity of answering, and WE BOTH received 'violation notices' and the question was deleted !!!
Above this answer, there are some excellent answers, and I suggest you read them seriously.
Pay little attention to the rhetoric, pay a lot of attention to the answers with references.

It pretty funny that people say, "They go too far." I mean, how do you go too far protecting civil liberties??? You either protect them or you let them get trampled, right?

I heard someone say once that it is easy to stand up for prinicples when it is convenient - but if you can't stand up for them when it is inconvenient then you really don't have any principles. That is why you HAVE to protect the civil liberties of groups like the KKK or else you won't have any civil liberties for anybody.

Get ready for some of the people here to bring up the fact that they have defended the KKK and NAMBLA. Some people can't grasp the fact that the ACLU doesn't support the views that these organizations promote, but rather supports their right to express those views, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. By the way, some of these same people may be interested to know that the ACLU has also represented Jerry Falwell.

When the L in the ACLU acutally stands for Liberties instead of Liberals', then I will support them.

Where were they when it came to protecting the rights of American soldiers charged with murder? Where were they when the Duke rape scandal was going on?

Like I've said before, the Aclu is a radical communist lawyer organization for the criminals, terrorists, druggies, porno pervs, and anti-American haters.

And they're a radical lawyer organization by the criminals, terrorists, druggies, porno perves, and anti- American haters.

Revealing FACTS on the ACLU:

They're doing more harm to this country than good.

Roger Nash Baldwin - the founding, long time, director of ACLU. Born to wealth, at the time of the founding, he was deeply involved in the communist movement. As late as 1935, he gave a speech stating that his political vision was communist. During the 1940s, Baldwin would participate in the purging of communists from ACLU, against a lot of opposition, and, in the 1950s, endorsed the work of Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

In my opinion, they should be disbanded for crimes against America.
