When the British Government put an end to transportation to Australia the prisoners in the Irish jails rioted.
Never stare at an Aussie's ankles if he isn't wearing socks.

It was first brought to European awareness by Captain Cook, though earlier sailors had seen or touched on it's shores, he was the first to really explore.
Cook's naturalist, Joseph Banks, was one of the premier scientists of all time. Many of Australia's plants and animals were first described by him, and a number are named for him.
For many years Australia was used by the British primarily as a penal colony called Botany Bay.
Many of the top Australian families trace their heritage to these early prisoners.

when cook landed here, he claimed it for england. after that, it became a penal (short for penalty) colony. in the 20th century, we opened the Sydney opera house, one of our landmarks. and yes, we say "mate" a lot (ignorant american). Whoever answered that should know they aren't helping the american stereotype! (p.s. americans have funny accents just saying)
