I've known of at least a few people who didn't quite make it to the top of the food chain.. not that it's particularly common for people to be eaten, but occasionally tigers, bears, dogs, alligators, etc. get to nibble on people. For the most part, though, we tend to outsmart them at the predatory game with the aid of our technology.
I have always looked at the food chain as more of a loop.. no beginning or end.. no top or bottom.. Everything gets eaten, everything eats... it is the food chain that makes up the circle of life.. so to speak. plants eat food from bacteria. animals eat plants people eat animals, bacteria eat people.. once we die.. or if we get cremated.. well.. plant food and also some of the carbon in our bodies goes off into the atmosphere as CO2.. which gets used by plants to make sugars... you see?

So there's the God answer...but that won't do you any good outside of Sunday school.
The science answer is that humans evolved to have enormously powerful brains, as well as hands with thumbs. Our brains allow us to think and reason on a much higher level than any other animal, which means we make tools to use with our handy-dandy hands.
By "tools" I mean everything from simple things like hammers, to complicated things like space shuttles. And of course I also mean guns and tractors, since those are 2 of the main tools we use to dominate other animals.
Edit: Just a correction to what Killheart101 said above, humans are Omnivores (we eat both plants and meat), not carnivores.
Also, it's true that sometimes sharks, alligators, hippos, etc eat people. That's because humans are basically defenseless without our tools. Even a golden retriever could probably K.O a human in a fight. So that's why we make technologies to defend ourselves.

Because we have adapted and evolved to be the superior Carnivors. We Can Kill ANything Because We Developed A Big Enough Brain To Create A Hand Gun SO THats Why we are at the top. We have the instincts to be superior.

I question your premise. Bacteria and viruses eat us quite a lot.
Also, there isn't just one food chain. We just seem to have gotten out of environments where we're not the top. If we started swimming in piranha-infested waters more we'd pretty quickly lose a couple of rungs.

That's actually a good question to ask.
In a biblical way God made us the top. He created us because we are his children. The others he created to help us live.

Because we are smarter than all of the other animals, and
God placed us in charge of the earth. Because we are created in His image, and are blessed with reasoning skills.
