Flying ants are usually termites. In my experience anyway. Look around and see if you find stuff lying around that looks like ground coffee kinda. You need to call a pest control place.

The flying ones are the Males... They get annoying, and all over the place, but they don't bite... they usually go away after the freeze and come out when it is REALLY humid...

I'd just put ant killer on the ant hill...

We had trouble with flying ants, and we mixed ant killer powder (available in most gardening stores and supermarkets) and syrup together and put it on bits of tinfoil and left it theyre for a few days. We then did this on alternate weeks for 2 months and they were gone completly and didn't come back.

If the swarm came all of the sudden, they are simply mating and will move on. Flying ants tend to mate at or near a high point in the general area. If not, gasoline will kill them... and your grass.

Catch one in a container and take it to a local plant nursery, gardening center - they should be able to identify your pest and give you a solution. You sure they are not termites? I have seen termites swarm and there will be tons of them flying all around.
